Who is Dr. Mike
Michael J. Morejon, M.D. is known as Dr. Mike, by those in the community.
Specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric conditions that affect children, adolescents, young adult and adults, Dr. Mike has dedicated the majority of his adult life to the study and practice of modern psychiatry. As a medical school graduate and psychiatrist, Dr. Mike is specially trained to treat all aspects of mental illness: Biological, Psychological and Sociological.
Dr. Mike has been named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Society, and he has two Board Certifications. He is certified in both Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and also in Adult Psychiatry. In addition to this, he has advanced and specialized training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
Adding to his advanced medical education and broad clinical experience, Dr. Mike regularly exchanges ideas and observations with colleagues in order to stay abreast of new developments in the fields of psychotherapy and psychopharmacology, and can thereby be more helpful to his clients.
In the course of treatment, Dr. Mike provides personalized care in a relaxed, comfortable environment. His unique combination of compassion, understanding and non-judgmental perspective is often all that is needed for a client to make a positive adjustment and move on to a more fulfilling life.
Unlike many psychiatrists that only prescribe medication (psychopharmacology), Dr. Mike’s care is based on the core principal that patients who require mental health care respond best to a combination of therapy and medication. In his practice, Proliance Center, there is an emphasis on the integration of a psychotherapeutic approach with careful and limited use of medication prescribed only when necessary.
From time to time other therapists in the community, who already have a working therapeutic relationship with their own patient, may refer their patient to Dr. Mike for evaluation and medication treatment (psychopharmacology), if needed. Due to Dr. Mike’s style of practice, they know he is not quick to medicate and that in many cases he may not recommend medications. In those situations Dr. Mike will work to maintain the patient’s relationship with his/her therapist and keep close contact with the referring individual.
Other patients come to Dr. Mike and Proliance Center, hoping to achieve a complete integration of care by receiving both medication treatment (psychopharmacology) and therapy provided solely by Dr. Mike alone or in coordination with other team members at our center. This is made possible by the most advanced electronic medical record system available to date for the mental health profession. This allows our team members to have greater, real-time contact with each other and provides the optimal setting for coordinated care, so often needed with the complex problems that affect some of our patients.
At Proliance Center Dr. Mike has observed that many people being treated for a variety of psychiatric symptoms, are often overmedicated. In fact, many psychiatrists routinely treat mental health problems with complex medication combinations that are not evidence based. A common practice “polypharmacy” is when someone is put on multiple medications. Usually there is no evidence at all that these combinations are effective. This can be costly, debilitating, and has no proven therapeutic effect. People can be on these medication regimens often for years only to be exposed to many side effects and potential long-term risk, with minimal relief of symptoms. Dr. Mike specializes in identifying polypharmacy in his patients and systematically eliminating unneeded medications, in coordination with the patient or their family member.
How We Treat
Knowledge, Experience and Sensitivity is at the heart of Proliance Center.
Proliance Center is unique and progressive in its approach to mental health treatment and personal wellness. The care we provide is personalized grounded in sound research, and draws on many treatment modalities. Our diverse clinical staff is trained in a variety of treatment modalities and brings over 30 years of experience in the field with children, adolescents, young adults and adults.
Dr. Mike and his team at the Proliance Center specialize in the treatment of not only common and “simple” psychiatric and psychological conditions, but particularly in the complex ones that others have failed to get under control. Many people wrongly believe that if they have more than one psychiatric condition going on at the same time that they are “more messed up”. But, in reality the complexity is just a reflection of their uniqueness as an individual, and they cannot be treated with a simple cookie cutter one-method-fits-all form of treatment.
Much of mental illness, as we know it today, is not “in your head” and can’t be addressed by “fixing it yourself”. There are a number of reasons that contribute to people feeling less happy and at peace than they deserve to be. At Proliance, we partner with the patient or their family to find out what those things are and fix them. They can include less than ideal health patterns (such as level of physical fitness and nutrition); less than ideal sleep habits; disturbing relationship patterns; past or present medical conditions; past or present abuse; past or present stressor at work, at home, or with friends; past or present challenges in dealing, relating and socializing with others; genetic vulnerability and the list goes on.
Many times when people go to seek help, the nature of our current medical system doesn’t allow all these things to be addressed in the time frame doctors are allotted for an assessment. As a result, people can be misdiagnosed, but more importantly other diagnoses that contribute to a person’s symptoms and quality of life are missed or not given much priority.
At Proliance we take the time to get it right the first time, saving you not only the time, money and energy involved in achieving the happiness our patients deserve, but unnecessary suffering, sometimes for years, that comes with dealing with an incorrect diagnosis or a less than optimal treatment.
It is well known that a lack of patient compliance with treatment is the result of a less than ideal doctor-patient relationship. Since patient compliance with the treatment (for what the doctor believes is going on with the patient) is key, a less than ideal doctor-patient relationship will lead to less than optimal treatment. This explains how people come into our office after “years” of treatment for one thing or another and then get better in a short period of time. No one ever really listened to what was going on with him or her and his or her whole problem was not addressed. Based on our partnering and teamwork philosophy, we listen to our patients and devise and personalized treatment plan to meet their needs.
Many patients come to Dr.
At Proliance personalized treatment is a must, and it is provided by our diverse line of professionals who are not only knowledgeable and experienced, but also sensitive to our clients’ needs. Once a working diagnosis is established, a fully individualized and comprehensive treatment plan is established in collaboration with the patient or his/her family. The team members at Proliance are specially trained in their area of expertise to integrate all relevant forms of therapy into our individually tailored treatment programs. These treatment programs may involve a combination of individual psychotherapy, medication management, family meetings, group therapy, marital therapy, or play therapy for children as agreed on by the patient or his/her family member.
What We Treat
